Empowered Living

It's Hot

by Rev. Guy Lynch  May/June 2011

Rev. Guy Lynch Unity Chuch of Las Vegas Summer is coming!! In Vegas, that has more implications than in other places. Our beautiful desert becomes a blazing place about mid June through mid August. Temperatures up to 115 degrees change our lives significantly. I remember my first summer here when Jan and I noticed a black tracking on the carpet of our house. We found out that just by walking or standing on the pavement, the soles of our shoes melted and left a mark on the carpet. OUR SOLES MELTED? Now that is HOT!!

It strikes me that the message of living the principles of Practical Christianity in our everyday lives resonates with this congregation because traditional Christian concepts of heaven and hell don't work for a Vegas crowd. The weather is so beautiful here in the fall, winter and spring that a future heaven holds no interest for you. The weather is so hot in the summer that a future hell doesn't scare you. Reverend David J. Seibert tells us that if we believe in the omnipresence of God and if there is a place called hell, then it can't be too bad a place because a God is there helping us transform it into heaven.

The truth is that it is the message of Practical Christianity that is HOT!! The message that as we increase our understanding of the principles Jesus taught and practice them in a consistent way, whatever hellish circumstance we experience in life can be transformed into an experience of heaven on earth. As this church continues to evolve, we learn together how we can be best put these principles to work to create lives of great abundance, perfect health, and wonderful loving relationships. Watch for upcoming classes like the 4T prosperity program, Lessons in Truth and others from me, Rev. Charlotte and others that will be the catalyst for totally transforming your lives. The teachings are HOT and our SOULS melt leaving our tracks on the carpet to heaven.

You deserve it. You know you do. You know others who would also benefit from this practical teaching. Get over your shyness and invite them to church and/or to class. The summer heat will mean nothing compared the cool refreshing goodness of a life lived in the spirit of God.

From Our Board

2011: A Graced Odyssey

by Ginger Tafoya March/April 2011

Unity Church of Las Vegas Board of Trustees News It may sound trite, but if someone would have said to me a year ago that I would participate in the Unity board of directors, much less president, I would have very nicely called them misinformed. Yet, here I am, truly blessed to be traveling with a stellar crew, on a journey to introduce Practical Christianity to the world.

Sounds grand, but it is certainly doable with the world of technology that has opened to all of us with the “simple click of a mouse.” But I’ve found that it has become far more complicated than I ever thought.

The new Web site is very close to launching and was held back because of our opportunity to videotape and snap photos of the congregation. Rev. Guy and I have been working diligently, poring through the footage. We’ve made our decisions and are scheduled to sit down with Grant Dunmire, who filmed, and begin the process of creating our clips.

Heart of The Matter

Wednesdays At Unity

by Rev. Charlotte Foust   May/June 2011

Rev. Charlotte Foust, Unity Chirch of Las Vegas, Heart of The Matter Did you know Unity Church of Las Vegas has had a Wednesday night service since September of 2010? With a brief intermission during the Christmas/New Year’s holidays, there has been a service at 7:00 p.m. every Wednesday evening. It is less formal, more relaxed and meditative than our Sunday celebrations. This mid-week spiritual tune up, will calm your heart and mind and reinvigorate your spirit.

Special services are scheduled on Wednesday evenings as well. Our communion service is held several times during the year and is an opportunity to celebrate our oneness with our Christ self. The healing service is a powerful opportunity to receive healing prayer for specific needs.

For those who are unable to attend Sunday services, Wednesday evening service is a place to share fellowship and spiritual nourishment with people of like mind and hear a message of hope, love and practical Christianity that will comfort, inspire and challenge you to live your best life yet.

Special thanks go to those without whom our service would not be what it is. Cat Shelling took the time to learn the sound board and lights so that I can be seen and heard.  Isabella and Sandra stepped up to be our ushers. Linda Addington has been our musical inspiration. Shirley Schutt serves at platform, reading the Daily Word and holding a prayerful energy during our healing prayer.

Rev. Charlotte Foust The newest addition to our team, Don Fouts, brings not only physical chair moving skills, but also prays us up for service. I am truly grateful for all they have done to help pull the service together. Arriving early to move chairs, set up equipment, check sound and transform the auditorium into our sanctuary, they make it happen every Wednesday.  And then help clean up afterwards.

Join us, won’t you? Take this opportunity to come back to your spiritual center in the middle of your busy week. We’ll save a seat for you.

Project Aspire

by Sara Henry  May/June 2011

I am so excited and indescribably proud to share the story of a community service project created by one of our teens, Selena Torres. The entire Torres family is a precious part of our church community. Selena will be organizing more PROJECT ASPIRE events in the future so please connect with her about supporting this amazing program…

Project Aspire, Selena Torres I am Selena Torres, and I am a high school sophomore that has been attending Unity Church of Las Vegas for as long as I can remember. As a Latina- American I have always felt that the Latino community was my community.  Church has always taught me to be aware of the issues that I hold internally, and the external issues with in the world.  Last year I noticed a big issue within Las Vegas. Though immigrants often want to learn how to become a citizen, it is a hard process that many are forced to learn on their own. I also noticed that within the community there was a dire need for teaching the job application process. Oftentimes members of the community, specifically the Latino community, are not sure how to fill out job applications, or about the job application process.

Is Richel in ‘Menopause’?    You bet she is!

Featuring  Richel Kompst  May/June 2011

This month’s article is not by Richel...it’s about her as written in Vegas Insider Daily by Bobbie Katz.

For Richel, going through Menopause is truly a song.

As the newest member of the cast of the hit musical Menopause the Musical performing at the Luxor, Richel sings the praises of the production that has changed the way women and men alike look at and deal with that fact of life.

Although Richel has been given the task of learning all four lead roles in Menopause, she is proving that no one is more capable of taking the heat.

“I learned the roles of the Soap Star and Iowa Housewife simultaneously in about two and a half weeks,” Kompst, who has been with the show about 8 weeks, explains. “We’re taking a step back before I learn the other two roles—Professional Woman and Earth Mother— to get me into rotation in the show. It’s so interesting, there are other people covering the different roles and with each person that does so, it becomes a whole different show. You pull a little of yourself from every character you play.

“While I probably relate more to the Iowa Housewife, being from Minnesota, I’ll probably play the Soap Star more because I’m physically and visually more of a Soap Star,” she continues. “I’m very tall—5-foot-8-inches—taller than anyone else in the show, and with heels on, I’m nearly 6 feet tall.”

Answered Prayer at Unity of Las Vegas

by Don Fouts   May/June 2011

Mythology stories enhance our ability to relate to our Creator. For interpretation, it is wiser to consider the potentials of the mythology story than to get stuck judging the literal statements.

Unity Church of Las Vegas In addition, of course God is not a man.  The reference Him or His, is simply an expression to assist in telling and understanding our story.

For the possibility of answered prayer, I find this story about our church makes me smile.

In the Vedic tradition, ancients recorded a story of how life came to be and why. In the story, our Creator comes to a stage to put forth a dream for the entertainment of his friends. God is sitting comfortably in a chair and enters a dream, projected for view by His audience. In the dream, God plays out the Big Bang and every dramatic experience created under the sun: The whole kit and caboodle—animals, mankind, every personal life and drama. In the end, God wakes up, and of course, the dream is over. His friends give God a standing ovation; indeed they are very amused. From the theater they exit and move on to whatever they choose to do next in their lives.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

by Paula Huffman   May/June 2011

Unity Church of Las Vegas The controversy over high fructose corn syrup goes on. Doctors, nutritionists and scientists have expressed a wide variety of opinions and theories about how it affects our health. The lobbyists and marketing companies would have us believe that, like all processed foods, there is absolutely nothing wrong with corn syrup. The truth, perhaps, lies somewhere in the middle.

Here are some things we do know. Cows, chickens and pigs are fattened for market by being fed corn. Even farm raised are fed corn. It would seem reasonable to assume that corn just might make us fat as well.   High fructose corn syrup starts with, you guessed it, corn.
